I have been working on my art class summer project Senses.
I had the idea of creating 5 tarot like cards one for each sense, trying to add a little twist to each illustration Sight being blindfolded in the dark and Smell being roses and something rotting in a bag, I guess you get the idea.
The sixth sense is just suggested by a downturned card and the tarot.
Thanks for dropping in.
Planning a painting for my artclass project, started with a sketch in my book and moving onto a larger effort on paper, I am trying some really grungy techniques splatter runny paint and torn tissue paper, under painting started it will be fun seeing where this one goes.
Always trying things never feeling like I make a finished image, something I am going to have to get my head around, perhaps it’s the doing I enjoy and I should not really worry about making a final image.
That’s enough pondering, I have been doing some charcoal and paint stuff it’s interesting the charcoal works into the paint and you get some interest marks and effects, it all feels very free.
Thanks to Lee Jeffries a very talented photographer for his reference pictures .
Yes its come to this, I am now painting flowers! It’s all part of my art class as we explore still life and sophisticated primitives. Flowers floating in water so there was a nice little twist that turned out very challenging.
Quick sketch with watercolours and gouache in class and a longer study using acrylics, I am going to try some acrylic gloss with this to see if it enhances the feeling of the water.
Started back at my art class this week, going to be looking at sophisticated primitives, the work of David Jones and others, not sure where this is going to take us as a warm up we were all given the same starting point to develop a picture, it will be interesting to see everyone’s efforts.
Also started a life drawing class a new tutor and location from last year, the first class was very good already lots of advice and encouragement.
Another first for me as my Art class goes outdoors for the summer. I spent a pleasant few hours sat in front of an old door enjoying the open air and messing with water colours, inspired I have been painting at home in the garden trying some different approaches to get a feel for what works for me, I enjoyed painting wet in wet but ended up with a bit of a muddy mess. I just need to learn from those disasters.
This week I have been messing with charcoal and water colour, sketching out another slightly surreal illustration for my strawberry tale, I think this is a little closer to the darker feeling of Jeremy Hush paintings and my starting inspiration.
This week at art class we looked at colour and the work of Brian Cook.
spent some time discussing how he uses colour and mixing a colour palette from one of his pictures, using red, blue, yellow, black and white gouache yet another media I had not used before, it sits mid way between water colour and acrylic.
we are now starting to think about working up our own pictures.
Starting back at art class, we are looking at tone, first we made a sketch picking out the different tones in the picture, then using 2 colours we made painting sketches again looking at tone and not colour. I started with Ultramarine blue and red making some nice purple mid tones. I thought the blue would be the darkest but settled on the red for my second sketch.
Working with our own picture we repeated the exercise this time I used green and magenta for my Glastonbury Tor image, do you think magenta cows will catch on.
