First canvas

Back at art-class for the second half of the term and we are painting on canvas, I have tried acrylic paper and canvas boards but actual canvas is  yet another level. I am learning the surface you paint on is as important as the paint and the  brushes  you choose to use.

Open  subject,  so I  selected a  self-portrait and the style of Peter Howson one of my favourite artists.

Wax Crayons clingfilm and salt.

Our art-class tutor is always throwing in different ideas this week we worked  with Autumn leaves and wax crayons, not really considered using wax crayons  but they are great repelling water colour paint and adding a wonderful; texture to your painting.

Looking forward to this weeks leaves home work.

Baroque Adornments

This week we looked at body adornments and jewellery,  working from the art work of artist Azza al qubaisi .

I started with a piece of jewellery and ended up with a piece of baroque design not sure its a finished piece, but it was fun and interesting to do.

I learnt something too if you are using water colours and charcoal don’t use any fixative until you have finished.

Started this one before I went on holiday, returning to it I am not sure where its going so I have put it on hold.

Used an electric pink ground after seeing a vid where the artist used Orange, I think its added to the feel of the picture.

Thought I would have a go at something with a bit of a storyline instead of just finding a face and painting away.

First I thought I might try using a track of music something from Mr Bowie. while looking up the lyrics I found a connection to the book and film 1984 so using a few stills from the film as reference I developed an idea.

Trying still to keep my painting loose,   scratched out a composition and started to paint.

see my progress as I reworked this a few times to where I am now, finished I think…

This week at art class we looked at colour and the work of Brian Cook.

spent some time discussing how he uses colour and mixing a colour palette  from one of his pictures, using red, blue, yellow, black and white gouache yet another media I had not used before, it sits mid way between water colour and acrylic.

we are now starting to think about working up our own pictures.
