Back to class

Started back at my art class this week, going to be looking at sophisticated primitives, the work of David Jones and others, not sure where this is going to take us as a warm up we were all given the same starting point to develop a picture, it will be interesting to see everyone’s efforts.

Plein Air

Another first for me as my Art class goes outdoors for the summer. I spent a pleasant few hours sat in front of an old door enjoying the open air and messing with water colours, inspired I have been painting at home in the garden trying some different approaches to get a feel for what works for me, I enjoyed painting wet in wet but ended up with a bit of a muddy mess. I just need to learn from those disasters.

Charcoal and Watercolour

This week I have been messing with charcoal and water colour, sketching out another slightly surreal illustration for my strawberry tale, I think this is a little closer to the darker feeling of Jeremy Hush paintings and my starting inspiration.

Wax Crayons clingfilm and salt.

Our art-class tutor is always throwing in different ideas this week we worked  with Autumn leaves and wax crayons, not really considered using wax crayons  but they are great repelling water colour paint and adding a wonderful; texture to your painting.

Looking forward to this weeks leaves home work.

Blue and white

This weeks art class we looked at  blue and white china, the Willow pattern and the work of Grayson Perry. we started just painting from the Willow pattern with the aim to develop a twist on the theme, I don’t think my head was in the right place for this and It didn’t really go anywhere, later I worked on a few ideas and  considered making a twist on the  Japanese wave.

I put it all down and started to look a bit deeper at Grayson Perry s work, I liked his twist on blue and white using yellow and I liked  how he uses text in his work, so  one thing followed another and I made a portrait  of him.

Baroque Adornments

This week we looked at body adornments and jewellery,  working from the art work of artist Azza al qubaisi .

I started with a piece of jewellery and ended up with a piece of baroque design not sure its a finished piece, but it was fun and interesting to do.

I learnt something too if you are using water colours and charcoal don’t use any fixative until you have finished.

More Colour

This week at art-class we have been working on our Brian Cook type pictures l have been simplifying the lines in my image to give a feeling of flow to the landscape. Late in the day I decided on white lines between the elements in the picture, I started by using masking fluid the lines were not very clean, perhaps my inability to paint with it,but I did find a little water helped. ended up using white gouache got some nice lines with my rigger brush.
